Instructions and Use

Before each use, check over the product to ensure there is no damage, such as chains splitting open or tears in the rubber. If damage is found, discontinue use to prevent further damage and potential injury. Please return the product to your local Hillsound retailer. Test product before each use for proper fit. Check positioning of front & rear spikes on the outer sole of your footwear. All spikes must fit within the outer edge of your footwear when fitted properly.

Always put on and remove Hillsound FreeSteps6 while seated. To fasten the FreeSteps6, place toes into the front section of the crampon and adjust so the toe guide wire is sitting in front of the shoe not on top or underneath the shoe. The front four spikes must sit untangled and position well within the outer edge of your footwear underneath the ball of the foot. Pull the rubber back-tab toward the heel and cover your footwear with rubber evenly positioned around the sides of your shoe.

To ensure a snug and secure fit, adjust the positioning of chains and rubber so all spikes sit firmly on the foot. Place one foot at a time to ensure balance and start walking on flat surface to test that it is fitting well. If the chains or rubber are loose, you may need to consider a smaller size for a tighter fit. All shoe makes and brands are different, so the Hillsound sizing chart should be used only as a guide. To remove the product, slide the back-tab off of the heel of the shoe, and slip the front of the foot out of the front section of the crampon.

Hillsound’s FreeSteps6 are designed for recreational activities such as trail running, fishing, light hiking, and are not made for technical climbing. These are not a mountaineering crampon. Avoid using the Hillsound FreeSteps6 on stairs. Use the FreeSteps6 with regular outdoor footwear, such as: runners, hiking boots, and insulated boots.

Transport the product using a sturdy bag so as to protect the spikes from damaging your valuable belongings. Always position the spikes away from the body when transporting them.

After use, the product must be thoroughly cleaned, dried and stored in a cool dry place.

Size Charts

Please note that where sizes overlap, this is to indicate that discretion is needed to determine the correct size. For the gaiters, the correct size can be dependent upon the individual’s calf size. For the traction devices, a correct fit is largely dependent on what type of shoe the individual will be wearing with the product. For all Hillsound products, we recommend you try the gaiters or crampons on in-store with the shoes you plan to wear them with to ensure you get the right fit.

So much traction, so simple!

I acquired a pair of FreeSteps6 Crampons during the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City, Utah. I could not wait to get these babies on my feet and get hiking on some snow and ice. Went out today hiking up a canyon a 5 minute drive from my home. Tons of ice and packed snow. Having these spikes on my feet saved me from slipping and wasting energy on taking more steps than needed to get up the trail. I could not be more happy with how these perform and how simple they are to get on and off your boots. You can also be confident that they aren't going to slip off your boot as the top of the crampons wraps over the toe of your boot. These are an incredible micro spike traction crampon for the price. Worth every penny!
Excellent on all terrains!
from Glastonbury
Just picked these up and tried them out the same day. I went trail running shortly after a snowstorm deposited about 3-4" of packable snow. The Freesteps6 held up on all terrains, from loose gravel (with snow), to rock faces covered with ice. In short, I never lost my footing once due to the snow/ice. However, the one small problem with the Freesteps6 is the tendency for snow to build up under the heel and toe. In each of these areas, the chains come together and form a small circle. Within these circles, the snow would slowly pack up and become the size of a golf ball. A quick kick against a tree breaks up the snow balls, but it was a bit frustrating to stop every mile or so nevertheless.
Ice fishing

I just wanted to say thank you for the Free Steps 6 Traction Device, it is by far the best traction device I have ever used for ice fishing. This year we have had cold temperatures and light snow which made for very slick ice conditions on the lakes. The Free Step 6 Traction Device spikes are just long enough to get thru the light snow and dig into ice and still allow for easy walking. With other traction devices I have used the light snow prevents the spikes from digging in making walking even worst. Being able to walk comfortably with the confidence of not slipping is worth every penny.
