Instructions and Use

Before each use, check over the product to ensure there is no damage, such as chains splitting open or tears in the rubber. If damage is found, discontinue use to prevent further damage and potential injury. Please return the product to your local Hillsound retailer. Test product before each use for proper fit. Check positioning of front & rear spikes on the outer sole of your footwear. All spikes must fit within the outer edge of your footwear when fitted properly.

Always put on and remove Hillsound Trail Crampon while seated. To fasten the Trail Crampon place toes into the front section of the crampon and adjust so the toe guide wire is sitting in front of the shoe not on top or underneath the shoe. The spikes must sit untangled and position well within the outer edge of your footwear underneath the ball of the foot. Pull the rubber back-tab toward the heel and cover your footwear with rubber evenly positioned around the sides of your shoe.

Pass the velcro strap under and over the opposite side of the rubber to prevent slippage of the crampon. Adjust the chains and base plate appropriately so that the base plates are fitting evenly and squarely underfoot. Place one foot at a time to ensure balance and start walking on flat surface to test that it is fitting well. If the chains or rubber are loose, you may need to consider a smaller size for a tighter fit. All shoe makes and brands are different, so the Hillsound sizing chart should be used only as a guide. To remove the product, slide the back-tab off of the heel of the shoe, and slip the front of the foot out of the front section of the crampon.

Hillsound Trail Crampon are designed for recreational activities such as trail running, winter hiking, and are not made for technical climbing. These are not a mountaineering crampon. Avoid using the Hillsound Trail Crampon on stairs, rocks or river crossings. Only use Trail Crampon in winter snow and ice conditions. Use the Trail Crampon with regular outdoor footwear, such as: runners, hiking boots, and insulated boots.

Transport crampons using a sturdy bag so as to protect the spikes from damaging personal belongings. Always position the spikes away from the body when transporting them.

After each use crampons must be thoroughly cleaned, dried and stored in a cool dry place. The chains are stainless steel and so will not rust, however the carbon steel base plate can. To prevent rust they can be oiled after use and drying.

Please note that where sizes overlap, this is to indicate that discretion is needed to determine the correct size. For the gaiters, the correct size can be dependent upon the individual’s calf size. For the traction devices, a correct fit is largely dependent on what type of shoe the individual will be wearing with the product. For all Hillsound products, we recommend you try the gaiters or crampons on in-store with the shoes you plan to wear them with to ensure you get the right fit.

Just back from my hike for today. I did the Pudding Pond trail located in the Green Hills Preserve. I remembered to wear my Hillsound Trail Crampons. What a difference it makes not having to think about where you are stepping and weather there is ice to slip on. I was able to walk the trail without the fear of slipping on the ice that was just under the 2 inches of snow we had in the morning. The crampons were easy to put on and were steady on the bottoms of my hiking boots and didn't shift from side to side probably do to the strap that crosses over the top. I would recommend these for anyone hiking the New Hampshire Mountains and trails.
Trail Crampon Review

First, I am from Wales and not US or Canada but no option for this on the review. Bought 2 pairs of these trail crampons(and have just bought a third for our daughter) for the snowy hills and mountains of Wales. They do exactly what they say they do. No more slipping on the slopes and icy trails.
Post knee surgery

About 13 weeks ago I had a surgical repair of my left superior patella tendon after a complete rupture. Over the last four weeks I have climbing/hiking as part of my rehab. We are having a very warm January/February here in Alaska with daytime temps between +28 to +40F, making for a lot of glare ice. I climb a trail that has about 900 feet elevation change over 1 1/2 mile stretch. There are some of the steepest sections that look like a hose was used to spray water on trail, then it has frozen in a 1-3" thick shiny/glossy ice. I cannot afford to slip or to fall with my knee. These simple crampons are perfect for my needs, gripping and holding without any slip. I see others using button type grips and the twisted wire type, both of which allow sliding, slipping and falling. I also see lots of the blue buttons on the trail that have come off their traction devices. On the somewhat negative side, the rubber framework is really large and is made best for very large boots. I have had the heel section come off for no obvious reason, other that its large size. It is not real bad, just irritating. Also, the reason I originally got these was because they came with a velcro strap over the top. Now that I have been using them for a while, I see no value in having them as they don't seem to be needed nor do they seem to do anything. Maybe if I was wearing large boots they might help, but I'm using mid height shoes and they are just decorations IMHO. Still, this is a minor issue. I have a lot of experience using instep crampons, six point heel crampons, and full size crampons. These rubber based crampons are light weight, go on/off fast and easy, less bulky to pack, and have a real purpose on the right trail. They are not for technical use, but are perfect for the trails I'm using during this crazy winter we are having. I have recommended them to many people.

Best 'Microspike' Crampon
Michael Coyne
from Boston
They call it a trail crampon but it's really a 'microspike' also known as Cleats. Hillsound makes the absolute best on the market today. They have more aggressive spikes, better rubber that has a universal fit & a clever Velcro strap that prevents slipping. Great for trail running & any general mountaineering grade or glacier where front points are not needed.

A truly superb product that continues to be a life saver in conditions where ice is mirror-like and walking a mile to the car down steep terrain requires only the best. These guys bite into ice and I never have felt the fear of slipping or falling. I want another pair!
I love it!

It's so icy outside and I would not like to go outside without my rail crampon. I feel safe with them on my feet. Too bad my dog cannot follow me because it's too icy haha!

We have personally used these trail crampons for winter outings on frozen lakes, rivers and canyons for over three years now and keep some for sale to / use by our guests. Have never had any issues and they work great for anything other than ice climbing or very steeply angled ice. Have not found a better product to-date but will try out the Ultra's as well. If there is one thing I would like to see improved it is to have the front two spikes pointing forward at a 45 degree angle to provide a better anchor when kneeling on the ice.

This is a useless piece of equipment. I have had two pairs fail on their first use, and if it was not for some effective in-the-field repairs with zip ties I would have been stranded upon the top of Skylight mountain in the middle of the Adirondack Mountains. Zero starts for Hillsound crampons - 5 starts for the zip ties.
I love them!!!

I love them! They have so much grip, I could not slip outside even if there's ice everywhere. I've recommended your company to all my friends! I'm looking to buy more stuff from you because your products are high quality! *This reviewer received free product through a company promotion.*
Hillsound Trail Crampon

I hike in the Adirondack High Peaks region in Keene, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake New York. I hike during all 4 seasons. Some hikes are to view and photograph the beauty of the lakes, rivers, cascades and waterfalls. Most of them though, are to climb the mountain's and earn the honor to have my picture taken at the summit. I always, even in the summer, carry my Hillsound Trail Crampons. Anyone that has hiked the "dacks" will know that crampons are not just for winter. I love these crampons and I believe I have my, Kahtoola wearing, partner almost ready to switch! Today we hiked Ampersand mountain and the trail was 80% solid ice. While both sets of crampons performed well during the ascent, my Hillsound Trail Crampons totally blew his Kahtoola Crampons off the trail on the descent. Luckily he only ended up with some minor bumps and bruises from his sliding on the ice. I didn't slip once. I credit my Hillsound crampons for saving my life at times and today was definitely one. I have also had other hikers approach me in the parking lots asking about them. They see that they are more aggressive with the added spikes just before the heel and you wouldn't believe the way people talk about the Velcro strap on the top. They act like it's the best idea in a long time for improving crampons. I can't say that I have heard or found 1 negative thing about them. They fit well and don't shift around. Possibly a benefit from the Velcro strap. They have the perfect amount and size of the spikes. They rarely snowball and I haven't had any problems with the rubber frame in any of the temperatures I have used them in, and I have used them in some pretty cold sub zero temps. I give Hillsound two thumbs up for this product and thank you for keeping my safety your #1 priority. My family and I appreciate it greatly!

On December 21 I placed 3rd in the inaugural Saranac Lake Winter Ultra 6er in the Adirondacks of New York. 32 miles, 18,000 feet of elevation change, 6 peaks, snow and frozen ice flow on trials. Crampons were needed for every inch. I brought two different pairs of crampons with me for the event: the Hillsound Trail Crampon and a similar style in a competitors brand. I ran the last 4 of the 6 peaks with the Hillsound as they a) stayed positioned on my feet and never fell off, b) provided superior traction and c) quickly gained my trust and confidence when running down or scrambling up steep frozen ice flow. I wore these with the Newton BOCO AT shoe. Trail Crampon worked like a charm. I never thought I would run 32 miles with a crampon attached to a sneaker - but I would do it again, and I would do it with a Hillsound. Thanks for taking adventure as seriously as I do!
