We purchased Trail Crampons for both of us recently. USPS delivered them just in time for our recent ice storm here in Hood River/OR--and they performed perfectly!!! (as expected given the on-line reviews)...Kent Blasie
Hey Kent, thanks for the great 5-Star Review! We're so happy your Trail Crampons arrived just in time to help you traverse the winter weather! Happy trails.
I try to hike daily in the Mount Holyoke Mountain Range. I have used Stabilizers, Kahtoola Microspikes, Kahtoola Exospikes but I find the Hillsound Trail crampons easier to put on and the spikes are a bit more aggressive. I also have instep crampons but I don't use them. We experience a lot of "wintry mix" conditions which usually end up with icy trails. The traction devices are very good for these conditions.
Hi Merry, thank you for leaving us a great 5-star review! We truly appreciate it. Thanks for giving the Trail Crampon so much love this season, happy trails!
Trail Crampon [US]
These are a solid step up from standard microspikes, but they shouldn’t be treated like a technical crampon replacement.
The strap helped keep the traction secure, and the more aggressive cleats helping getting up and down icy hills.
Like most traction though, it’s not a substitute for actual crampons: it doesn’t have aggressive enough spikes so it would not be as secure on harder ice, like blue glacial ice. It balls up when snow and ice accumulates underneath because it doesn’t have an anti-balling plate. The staining will also rub off and the cleats will rust if going over rock or gravel; I don’t know how effective filing off the rust would be like my full-crampons. They’re also higher profile than standard microspikes so they can catch on terrain and vegetation more easily. The chains and rubber pieces are also not quite as secure as the straps and plates on my BD/Grivel crampons.
They’re a wonderful trail cleat, but it helps to know the limitations of the device before getting in too deep in icy/technical territory or before committing to using them heavily in a bushwhack (for instance).
I used them for the first time yesterday on mixed terrain (snow, gravel, rock), in a bushwhack hopping over trees and brush, and on snow.
Hi Enji, Thank you so much for giving us a 5-Star Review and for sharing your experience and expertise! We truly appreciate it. Hope you have an adventurous season and happy trails!
Les crampons demeurent en place et assurent une grande protection en montagne. Très bon choix.
Hi Denise, thank you for your feedback! We are happy to hear you are enjoying using the Trail Crampon in the mountains, enjoy!
